I Buy PPE for a Living. Here's What a 2024 Review Taught Me About Ansell Gloves, Goggles, Boots, and Bear Spray
An office administrator shares the story of reviewing Ansell PPE gloves, deciphering a safety goggles drawing, choosing work boots, and why the difference between pepper spray and bear spray matters.
How I ended up in this position
I'm the office administrator for a 400-person industrial services company across three locations. I manage purchasing—roughly $250,000 a year across 15 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. I've been doing that since 2020, when I took over from a guy who retired and left a binder of handwritten notes. One of those notes said: "Ansell gloves are the safe call." That was it. That was my spec.
For three years, that note worked. We'd reorder Ansell PPE gloves, send them to the warehouse, and nobody complained. Then the new supervisor asked the question I couldn't answer.
The review that started with a glove
I pulled the order history. We were paying about $18 per box for "Ansell MTMT nitrile gloves" from a distribution partner. I compared datasheets from three vendors. The prices varied by 40% for products that looked almost identical. I assumed "same specifications" meant the same level of protection. It didn't. We didn't have a formal PPE selection process, and it showed.
One was a general-purpose nitrile glove. Another was rated for limited chemical splash. The Ansell MTMT nitrile gloves were the only ones with a chemical permeation chart that matched the solvents we actually use in our maintenance areas. The "cheaper alternative" was not an alternative at all. It was a different glove with a similar photo.
I'm not a chemist or a safety engineer, so I can't look at a chemical name and tell you if a glove is compatible from memory. What I can do as a buyer is ask for the test data. If a vendor can't produce a permeation chart, I no longer place the order.
Then came the safety goggles drawing
While we were in the middle of the glove review, the same supervisor sent me a safety goggles drawing from an old equipment manual. It was a parts diagram—exploded view of the frame, lens, strap. He wanted to know if the replacements we ordered matched the original. The drawing didn't tell me anything about impact rating or chemical splash resistance. It was a drawing, not a spec.
That's when I learned that "looks like the same goggles" is just as dangerous as "looks like the same glove." A proper safety goggle spec includes things like ANSI Z87.1 marking, coverage area, ventilation, and whether it's rated for chemical splash or just impact. A part number in a parts diagram is not enough.
We still use goggles for grinding and chemical handling. But now I order by standard and feature, not by "match this drawing."
Work boots turned into a debate
Somewhere in this process, the warehouse manager asked me about work boots. "We need new boots for the loading team." That's all he said. Six people gave me six opinions.
I learned to stop asking "what boots do you want" and start asking "what are the hazards?" Their answer: metal decking, wet floors, occasional electrical areas, and a lot of walking. So we narrowed it to composite-toe, EH-rated, slip-resistant work boots. The brand mattered less than the certifications. I didn't care if someone thought brand X was cooler. I cared if the boot had the right ratings and fit each person properly.
The result was a two-vendor boot program with a fitting day, which took three hours once and saved at least 20 return/exchange cycles the following year.
The plot twist: pepper spray and bear spray
In the middle of all that, an off-site crew put in a request for "pepper spray" for outdoor work. They needed bear protection. I had to look it up. The difference between pepper spray and bear spray matters a lot more than people think.
Pepper spray is a personal defense tool. It's usually a concentrated stream or gel aimed at an attacker. Bear spray is designed to be sprayed into a cloud or fog between you and a bear at a greater distance. The formulations are different, the concentrations are different, and the delivery patterns are different. You don't want to swap them.
I canceled the initial order and specified bear spray for that crew. The vendor confirmed the EPA registration and the canister size. It was not a "close enough" situation.
What the whole process cost and saved
This review took about four weeks. It went from one questioned line item to a company-wide PPE matrix. I won't pretend it was fast or comfortable. I had to tell at least two vendors we were no longer using their products because they couldn't provide the documentation we needed. One of them said, "But we've supplied PPE for years." Yes, and "years" is not a spec.
Also, when a vendor says "premium quality," I now ask for the test standard. The FTC's advertising guidance says claims need to be substantiated. In PPE, that substantiation is an ANSI, ASTM, or EN standard—not a glossy brochure.
The matrix we built is basically one page: task → hazard → required product → acceptable standard. It includes:
- Solvent handling: Ansell MTMT nitrile gloves (or approved equivalent with matching permeation data)
- Cut-risk tasks: cut-resistant gloves with ANSI/ISEA cut level rated for the specific material
- Grinding and chemical splash: safety goggles with ANSI Z87.1 and splash protection
- Warehouse/loading: composite-toe, slip-resistant work boots with EH rating where needed
- Remote outdoor crews: bear spray (EPA-registered) in the personal safety kit
We consolidated our PPE spend from 8 vendors to 3. That cut about 12% off the annual cost, but honestly, the bigger win was time. I used to spend hours each month comparing catalogs and answering "which one do we order?" Now the matrix answers it in 45 seconds. Our accounting team also stopped chasing down invoices with missing specs.
The lessons I'd pass along
Everything I'd read about buying PPE said the premium option is always safer. My experience suggests that's not quite right. The safest option is the one rated for the hazard, used correctly, and worn consistently. Sometimes that's the premium option. Sometimes it's a mid-tier option with the right data. The fundamentals haven't changed: buy for the hazard. But the execution has transformed. What was "best practice" when I started in 2020 doesn't get you very far in 2025. There are better datasets, better product lines, and better documentation standards now.
I'm not a safety engineer, so I won't pretend to know how each material interacts with every chemical. That's not my job. My job is to make sure the experts' requirements are actually on the purchase order. If a product doesn't come with a datasheet, a certification, or a standard that I can verify, it's not a product I can defend to my operations manager.
One more thing: as of early 2025, the specific products we standardized on are still in place. But I verify current ratings and certifications every cycle. Things change. Prices change, standards get updated, and product lines get refreshed. You should do the same before you budget for the year.
