If you're buying Ansell products for a company, you have probably typed a few variations of these questions into Google. Here are the answers I'd give myself if I were starting over. No fluff, no sales pitch. Just what matters when you are comparing quotes.

1. What's the difference between Ansell Gammex latex gloves and the Edge nitrile line?

Gammex is Ansell's medical/surgical line. Edge is their industrial line. Different facilities, different certifications, very different price points.

I've seen purchasing teams order Gammex for general maintenance work because "surgical-grade must be better." That is not how it works. Surgical gloves are manufactured for sterile environments — but a Gammex pair can cost 2-3x what an industrial nitrile glove costs, with zero practical benefit on a shop floor.

Unless you're in healthcare or a cleanroom, you're probably overpaying if someone quotes you Gammex. One exception: handling high-risk pharmaceuticals where medical certification is mandatory rather than optional. And since Gammex is latex, check whether your team has latex allergies before standardizing on it.

2. Where are Ansell Edge nitrile gloves manufactured?

Ansell is the manufacturer. They're an Australian-headquartered company with production across multiple countries. If I remember correctly, a lot of their nitrile glove output is in Southeast Asia — Malaysia, Thailand — but don't quote me on that. It varies by product line and even by batch. The country of origin is printed on the box, and that's the reliable answer.

Here's the blind spot I see all the time: buyers get fixated on country of origin as a quality signal, when the real signal is the certification mark. A glove that carries EN 388 or ANSI/ISEA 105 ratings is telling you how it performs in abrasion and cut testing. The origin story is just a story.

I've rejected a domestic batch that failed abrasion testing, then approved an imported batch with stronger specs. Where a glove is made tells you very little about how it protects your people.

3. Are black nitrile gloves food safe?

Yes — if the specific product is certified for food contact. The color is irrelevant. Black nitrile is just nitrile with carbon black pigment, and carbon black isn't inherently a food-safety problem.

The reference for food-contact rubber articles is FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, which sets extractive limits for the formulation. Some black nitrile gloves meet it. Some don't. The only way to know is to ask for the compliance documentation for that exact SKU.

Most buyers ask "is black nitrile food safe?" The better question: "can you show me the FDA paperwork?" If a supplier can't produce it, walk away. No documentation, no order. I approved a cheap glove without paperwork in 2022, and we had to halt a food client's line for a day while re-verifying. The savings were zero. Actually, it cost us about $1,200 in credited labor.

4. Does Ansell make kids work boots or insulated coveralls?

I want to say our industrial line runs at AQL 2.5 — but most of what we do doesn't need anything tighter. If your risk assessment says you need 1.5, you're buying medical-grade, not industrial. That's the right call when it's warranted, just know what you're paying for.
