Here's a confession: I'm an office administrator, not a safety engineer. Why I stopped pretending to be a safety expert

Take Ansell safety gloves in the UK market, for example. The EN 388 standard governs cut resistance, with levels from 1 to 5. But here's where it gets tricky: the standard now includes a second cut test (ISO 13997) because the original test didn't behave the same way with high-performance yarns like Kevlar. If your supplier can't explain the difference between the old and new cut ratings, that's a red flag.
This gets into materials science territory, which isn't my expertise. But recognizing that gap? That's the part I've gotten good at. I don't need to be the expert. I need to know what questions to ask the ones who are.
The surprise that changed how I buy
Never expected the premium glove to be the cost-saving option. Turns out price per pair is a terrible metric.

The helmet's spec sheet tells you the shade range; it won't tell you what shade your welders need. That's a conversation between their safety team and the people doing the work. My job is to make sure the spec exists and the product matches it.
And work boots? "Where to buy work boots near me" is one of the most-searched phrases in our industry for a reason—people want to try them on. But from a procurement perspective, the phrase that matters is "ASTM F2413". That's the standard for impact and compression resistance in protective footwear. If the boot doesn't meet F2413, the comfort in the store doesn't matter.
What about one-stop shopping?
I get the appeal. One vendor for everything means fewer invoices, fewer relationships, faster approval from finance. There's a real operational simplicity to it.
I have mixed feelings about consolidation. On one hand, it makes my job easier. On the other, I've seen what happens when non-specialists pick safety products: they default to whatever's in stock, whatever's cheapest, whatever the rep pushes that week. That's not a safety program. It's a dice roll.
My compromise: a primary supplier for routine volume orders, and a specialist for anything that touches a safety standard. It's not the cleanest system. It means two invoices instead of one. But I've slept better since the audit.
A supplier once told me, "This isn't our strength—here's who does it better." That man earned my trust for everything else. I've never forgotten it.

You don't need to be a safety engineer to buy PPE well. You need to know the limits of what you know—and you need vendors who are honest about theirs.
Ask for the standard. Ask for the test data. Ask for the lifecycle cost, not the unit price. And if a supplier claims to be equally good at everything? In my experience, that's when you start looking elsewhere.
