I've spent six years buying PPE for a 140-person metal fabrication company. That means managing roughly $135,000 in safety equipment invoices every year, comparing quotes, and running samples past workers who do not care about my spreadsheet. This FAQ covers the questions I hear from other buyers—plus a few I think every purchaser should ask before approving an order.
1. Is Ansell Actually Worth the Higher Price?
I get this one a lot. When an established brand sits next to a cheaper import with a similar spec sheet, the first instinct is to assume they're the same product. In my comparison spreadsheets, generic gloves have come in 20–40% lower per box. But price per box is not what I budget around. But TIG welding demands precision and fine control. The welder feeds filler rod close to the arc and needs to feel the torch movement. A stiff, bulky glove destroys that control—and a frustrated welder will take the glove off for the tricky parts. That's when burns happen.
For TIG work, look for a lighter glove made from goatskin or deerskin. These materials give better dexterity while still handling heat. In Europe, welder gloves are classified under EN 12477. Type A gloves give higher protection; Type B gloves are designed more for precision work. For TIG, a Type B glove is usually the right starting point.
Check reinforced stitching in the thumb and index area, because that is where TIG wear happens first. And make sure the glove has a proper heat performance rating. The thinnest glove that still passes the required heat test is the one welders will actually keep on. Remember: protection you tolerate is protection you wear.
5. What's the Real Difference Between Budget FR Coveralls and Expensive Ones?
"FR is FR" is one of the most dangerous assumptions in PPE buying. It is not true.
There are two broad families of flame-resistant fabrics: inherent FR and FR-treated. Inherent FR fabrics use fibers that are flame-resistant by nature, like aramid or modacrylic. FR-treated fabrics start as a base material, usually cotton, and get a chemical finish. Treated fabrics can perform well, but they need specific laundering care. They can degrade if washed with chlorine bleach or industrial detergents. A cheap FR coverall might pass a lab test on day one and lose a lot of that performance after a few wash cycles.
You also need to match the garment to the hazard. Flash fire, arc flash, and welding spatter are not the same risks. They are covered by different standards: NFPA 2112, ASTM F1506, EN ISO 11612, and ISO 11611, among others. A coverall that's right for one setting may be wrong for another.
When I compare FR quotes, I ask one main question: what standard is this garment certified to, and can the manufacturer provide the test report? The price difference matters. But a lower price means nothing if the garment fails when it's actually needed.
6. How Does a Welding Helmet Work—And Which Features Actually Matter?
There are two types of welding helmets: passive and auto-darkening. A passive helmet has a fixed dark shade lens. An auto-darkening welding helmet works more like a smart window. Sensors on the front of the helmet detect the intense light of the welding arc. That signal triggers a voltage change in a liquid crystal layer, which makes the lens go dark in fractions of a millisecond—before your eyes register the bright flash.
One thing many people don't realize: even in the light state, the lens blocks UV and IR radiation. The UV/IR protection is built into the filter permanently. The auto-darkening feature is about visible light and eye comfort, not only safety.
What should you pay for? In my experience, three things matter most:
Optical clarity—a helmet with poor optics causes eye strain and headaches. Switching speed—slow filters can flicker on low amperage TIG, which is annoying and distracting. And adjustability—a helmet with sticky headgear or awkward controls will end up on the bench, not on the welder's head.
Check for ANSI Z87.1 compliance in the US or EN 379 compliance for the auto-darkening filter if you're buying internationally. Then let the welder try the helmet before you order a full set. It's cheaper to replace one sample than to supply helmets nobody wants to wear.
7. What Question Should You Ask Before Any PPE Order?
The most important question I've learned is not "what's the unit price?" It's this: will this actually stay on someone for eight hours?
Last year, I picked a lower-cost glove line that saved about $2,100 on the initial order. The workers hated them within a week. Fit was wrong, they were hot, and they caused irritation. Monthly glove consumption jumped by roughly 40% because people kept throwing pairs away and grabbing new ones. The budget saving disappeared, and I created a new problem for the workers I was supposed to protect.
The hidden cost in PPE is never just the unit price. It's the cost of equipment that gets abandoned, ignored, or replaced early.
